Spicy Nut Balls

This basic "sandie" cookie adds ground nuts & spices to the dough, which is shaped into balls, baked and then rolled in powdered sugar.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 2 1/2 cups confectioners sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 2 cups flour
  • 3/4 cup finely ground walnuts

Method

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Beat together butter, 1/2 cup of the confectioners sugar, the vanilla, and salt until well blended. On low speed, beat in spices and then flour. Add nuts; form into 1-inch balls. Place 2 inches apart on an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake for 10-12 minutes. While cookies are baking, put the remaining 2 cups confectioners sugar in a large bowl. Place hot cookies, a few at a time, into bowl and roll around until coated. Repeat rolling in sugar after cookies have cooled.

Notes: You may added some colored sugar to the confectioners sugar for extra sparkle.

Number of servings: 40-50
