Butter-Nut Shortbread Bars

A buttery, nutty crust is the base for these spiced sugar-topped bars.
Ingredients
- 1 Cup butter or margarine, softened
- 1 Cup firmly packed brown sugar
- 2 Cups all purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 egg whites
- 1 Cup chopped walnuts or pecans Topping:
- 1 Tablespoon butter, melted
- 1/4 Cup sugar
- 1/4 Cup brown sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/8 teaspoon cloves

Method
1. Cream butter and brown sugar 2. Add flour, baking powder, and salt 3. Mix for about 2 minutes or until soft dough forms 4. Press dough into a 15x10x1 inch baking pan 5. Beat egg whites with fork 6. Brush dough with whites, using only enough to cover lightly 7. Sprinkle with 1/2 cup chopped walnuts 8. Bake for 15-20 minutes 9. remove from oven 10. Mix all topping ingredients together plus other 1/2 of chopped nuts, Should be crumbly 11. Sprinkle over top of bar 12. Return to oven for 5 to 8 minutes 13. Cut into bars while warm 14. Cool on wire rack
